Dear Readers,
Our brave traveler, Lemuel Gulliver, has just left the strange land of Glubbdubdrib. Now, he finds himself in another mysterious place filled with even more astonishing experiences.
Journey to the New Land
After leaving Glubbdubdrib , Gulliver sets sail again, eager to return to England. However, fate has other plans for him. His ship encounters a fierce storm that blows them off course. The storm rages for days, and the ship is tossed about like a toy in the waves. Eventually, the ship is wrecked, and Gulliver finds himself clinging to a piece of debris, fighting to stay afloat.
Arrival in the Land of the Houyhnhnms
Exhausted and barely conscious, Gulliver is washed ashore on an unfamiliar island. He collapses on the beach, grateful to be alive. After resting for a while, he begins to explore his surroundings. The landscape is beautiful and serene, with lush green fields and clear blue skies.
As Gulliver ventures further inland, he notices something peculiar. The island seems unusually quiet, with no signs of human habitation. Instead, he sees groups of horses grazing peacefully in the fields. Amazed, he approaches one of the horses to get a closer look.
To his astonishment, the horse looks at him with an intelligent gaze, unlike any animal he has ever seen. Gulliver soon realizes that these are no ordinary horses. They are the Houyhnhnms, a race of highly intelligent and rational beings who live in perfect harmony with nature.
Meeting the Houyhnhnms
Gulliver’s initial encounter with the Houyhnhnms is fascinating. The Houyhnhnms communicate with each other through a complex language of neighs and whinnies. Gulliver, having a knack for languages, quickly picks up some basic words and phrases.
The Houyhnhnms are curious about Gulliver and treat him with kindness. They are puzzled by his appearance, as they have never seen a creature like him before. Gulliver tries to explain that he is a human, but the Houyhnhnms find it hard to believe that a creature with such limited intelligence and reasoning capabilities could belong to a rational species.
The Yahoos
As Gulliver spends more time with the Houyhnhnms, he learns about another species that inhabits the island: the Yahoos. The Yahoos are savage, brutish creatures who resemble humans in appearance but lack any form of intelligence or civility. They are dirty, violent, and governed by their base instincts.
Gulliver is horrified to see the Yahoos, as they remind him of the worst aspects of humanity. The Houyhnhnms regard the Yahoos with disdain and keep them as servants and laborers. Gulliver, on the other hand, feels a deep sense of shame and embarrassment, seeing the resemblance between the Yahoos and his own species.
Learning from the Houyhnhnms
Gulliver becomes a guest of a kind Houyhnhnm family. He is given a place to stay and is provided with food and clothing. The Houyhnhnms are keen to learn about Gulliver’s world, and he shares stories about European society, politics, and customs.
The Houyhnhnms listen with interest but are often appalled by what they hear. They find it difficult to understand the concepts of war, greed, and deceit. To them, these are alien ideas that go against their principles of reason, honesty, and harmony.
Through his interactions with the Houyhnhnms, Gulliver starts to see his own world in a new light. He admires the Houyhnhnms’ way of life and their commitment to rationality and virtue. He begins to question the values and behaviors of human society, feeling increasingly alienated from his own kind.
Gulliver's Transformation
Gulliver’s time with the Houyhnhnms has a profound impact on him. He adopts many of their customs and philosophies, striving to become more rational and virtuous. He spends his days engaging in meaningful conversations with his Houyhnhnm friends, learning about their history, culture, and way of life.
However, not all Houyhnhnms are convinced of Gulliver’s rationality. Some still see him as a peculiar and potentially dangerous Yahoo. This tension creates an undercurrent of unease in Gulliver’s otherwise peaceful existence on the island.
Looking Ahead
In our next edition, we will explore the final days of Gulliver’s stay in the land of the Houyhnhnms. We will learn how and why he is eventually forced to leave this utopian society and return to the world of humans. Gulliver’s experiences in this strange new land provide some of the most thought-provoking and poignant moments in Swift’s masterpiece.
